The Western Slope Copper Mining and Smelting Company was formed in 1900 in Grand Junction, Colorado and owned mines within the Unaweep Mining District, Mesa County, Colorado (south of Grand Junction). The company’s claims included the Metallic, Bimetallic, Mollie Brooks, Three Friends and Laura claims, including a 20-acre mill site in Unaweep Canyon. In addition to copper, mined ores contained significant gold and silver.
Mining camps in the Unaweep district were built in the late 1800s near the towns of Copper City and Pearl City, during the copper boom of 1897-1912. While Copper City once had a small smelter and building constructed for businesses, schools and some homes, Pearl City remained a community of tents for 17 years. The Pearl City Hotel, which offered the finest accommodations in town, consisted of three tents joined together.
