    Description

Many years ago I heard a rumor that an old hospital in New England was closing down and selling off all kinds of weird medical stuff from the previous century. Curious, I took a drive to check it out, and did, indeed, see a lot of things for sale that were oddly compelling and thought-provoking – you could call them “quack” devices; thankfully, I managed to restrain from taking them home and starting my own museum. One thing, though, caught my eye for a different reason – a beautiful, tall, solid mahogany (no veneer!) cabinet that had once housed a very early (i.e. 1920's) x-ray machine. The x-ray equipment had long since been removed, and the cabinet tucked away in a storeroom, where I found it, but as soon as I saw in and measured it (it’s good to have a pocket measuring tape in your keychain), I realized it would work perfectly as a stand and cabinet for an old mahogany talking machine. It did!
To start with, it is exactly the right size for a Victrola VV-IX (see pictures; PLEASE NOTE: Victrola is NOT included!), VV-X, and tabletop VV-XI, and also looks great with mahogany horn machines like the Victor IV, Victor VI, Columbia BD and Columbia BY. The cabinet measures 41.5”h x 18”w x 22”d, with rounded corners, and a handsome, solid door, which opens to a chamber that could easily be fitted with several shelves for records; I never did so, because I liked the cabinet exactly as it is, and didn’t care to “improve” it. As you can see, the original red mahogany finish is in really fine shape just as it is. Even the original double-casters – 4 pairs of them – are in great condition and turn freely without much noise. I have used this wonderful cabinet as a phonograph pedestal – the extra inches it has on your typical old record cabinet showcases phonographs nicely, and spares me from having to bend over much – and displayed it proudly in my library for years, but now I’m running out of space so it’s time to pass it along to another collector who will admire and enjoy it as much as I have. If you’ve been looking for a handsome off-beat cabinet/pedestal for an old mahogany talking machine, this is your lucky day; you will never find anything as nice – and solid! – as this. Best of all, I offer it here with NO RESERVE – high bidder takes it!
PLEASE NOTE: This cabinet is located in Wiscasset, Maine, and can be picked up there. For a fee, I might be able to deliver it to the UPS store in Brunswick, Maine, or to Portland, Maine, either to you or to someone who will pack it up and ship it at your expense, but if you intend to do this, you must contact me BEFORE you bid so we can discuss the delivery fee. Similarly, if you intend to bid but do not intend to come pick it up in Maine within a week or two of the auction's close, you must notify me of this BEFORE you bid so we can discuss options and delivery fees; the earlier, the better. Payment must be received BEFORE pickup or delivery is scheduled. I reserve the right to refuse sale to anyone with excessive negative feedback or an otherwise suspicious history. Payment is due within three (3) days of the auction's close. Due to its age I am selling this unit without any warranty. All sales are final.
Be sure to see all the pictures! I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, but please try to ask as early as possible, as it sometimes takes me a while to get to my email. Please see my other listings,
as I am running out of space and am thinning out my collection considerably.
I am listing other fine radios, phonographs, and vintage items this week, and will be listing even more in the weeks and months to come, so please keep checking. Thanks for looking! Good luck, and happy bidding!
