Hand made wooden icon box - it is decoupage - perfect for rosary prayer beads anything small - The icon of Our Lady or Perpetual Help also known as Our Lady of Succour is well known in both the Eastern and Western Churches.
The model for this icon is the Cretan Byzantine icon of Our Lady Theotokos of Passions found in the Keras Kardiotissa Monastery in Greece. The original icon has been in Rome since 1499 and is enshrined today in the Redemptorist Church of St Alphonsus in Rome.
The Virgin in the half-figure icon is dressed in royal colors of dark blue or red as Empress or Queen. The Virgin type of icon is called Hodegteria - She that points the way to Christ her son. The Virgin looks straight ahead is a larger figure than her son. The eight pointed star on fore-head and shoulder is a sign of her virginity and the divine nature of her son
The icon is very popular in the Western Church specially among the Slavic people. Through out the worlds there are many shrines and churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Her feast day in the Roman church is June 27th.
