The Colorado Mine Developing Company owned and operated silver mines within the Leadville Mining District during the late 19th century. The company’s mines were a few miles north of Leadville on the eastern face of Mt. Zion along the Arkansas River. Mining claims owned by the company included the Grey Fox, Red Fox, Honest John, War Eagle, and the Windsor claims, covering 43 acres. The President of the Colorado Mine Developing Company was John F. Humphreys. Humphreys was the Mayor of Leadville at the time that he signed this certificate. He also purchased the Robert E. Lee mine at Leadville, which would become a significant producer of silver. John F. Humphreys was an active participant to bring an end the miners strike in Leadville on June 8th, 1880, just months before this certificate was issued.
